**** What can you do to protect ServMan on your network from a computer virus?****
As you may have sensed, computer viruses are becoming widespread. One type of virus that is propagating across cyberspace is a “ransomware” virus that partially encrypts your network files and then offers to unencrypt them if you pay a fee. Many of the ransomware viruses travel across your network by reading your mapped drive letters (F:, S:, T:, etc.)
At one point, we recommended setting ServMan up on your workstations using mapped drive letters because the setup was easy and direct. Now our preferred installation methodology is to have your IT company share a folder (usually APPS) on your server, and have the ServMan shortcut on the users’ desktops use a UNC path name instead of a mapped drive letter.
If your workstations are currently using mapped drives to access ServMan (ask your IT company to check your ServMan shortcuts) then you may want them to switch over to a UNC path as described above.
