SQL Server Express is a free edition of SQL Server; however, it has several limitations and is NOT recommended to be used as your ServMan database.
Scalability is a significant shortcoming of SQL Server Express editions. For example, SQL Server Express 2012 is limited to the lesser of one socket or four cores. The maximum memory for the database engine is limited to 1GB and the maximum relational database size is 10GB. We have seen ServMan clients who opted for SQL Express reach these limitations which interrupt your ability to conduct business until upgrading to at least the Standard version of SQL. If you are currently using SQL Express, you should plan now to upgrade so you are not faced with a system emergency in the future.
Beyond a small database size limitation, some of the features available in other SQL Editions, but not in SQL Server Express, include the following:
- Features such as data mirroring, clustering, etc.
- SQL Agent*
- Reporting Services
- Business Intelligence Platform, such as Notification and Analysis Services
- SQL Management Studio
*SQL Server Express does not support SQL Agent for running timed processes. This would prohibit using ServMan’s management dashboards as well as other timed processes that may be added to ServMan in the future.
